Benefits of IGCSE past papers

The benefits of analyzing past papers that I observed during my preparation for IGCSE to achieve high grading scores.

Understanding the exam structure

Understanding exam structure is not possible without past papers. With the help of past papers, I can understand the weight of each question and become familiar with the marking scheme. After understanding the weight of each question, I prepare content accordingly. I can also understand the areas that need to be improved and stay focused on those areas.

IGCSE papers consist of multiple-choice, short questions, and brief questions. I can prepare myself for multiple choices by preparing different keywords and formulae. I can also prepare concise questions by dividing the content into separate portions. I can also prepare each portion according to the weightage of each question.

Instead of cramming the whole syllabus, I only focus on those questions that may lead me to achieve high marks and ignore those that are less important according to the examination point of view.  I also plan my timetable and schedule according to the structure of the paper. If a question carries 40 marks, I plan to prepare content to achieve good grades.

Improve time management

Time management is essential to achieving high scores in IGCSE exams. With the help of past papers, I learn how to manage time for each question. I also know how to divide the time between each question and prepare myself to achieve high exam scores. A lack of proper time management may lead me to fail exams, or I may have to skip any questions due to a shortage of time.

I sometimes spend more time on one question with fewer marks and don’t find time for brief questions. With the help of past papers, I learned how much time is required for each question, and with practice, I can easily manage it without affecting their handwriting. With proper time management, I can stay focused and overcome exam anxiety.

Past papers helped me to understand how much time is allocated for each question. When I  have an exam of 100 marks and have a time of 150 minutes, I have to attempt each question in 1.5 minutes. However, short questions and multiple choices may take less time. After practicing past year’s papers, I often plan my time for each paper.

“Better three hours too soon than one minute too late.”

Understand the marking scheme.

The marking scheme enables me to divide the whole content into chunks and prepare each according to the marking criteria. With the help of a marking scheme, I can follow the ABC technique.

  • Urgent (most important)
  • Better do it soon (less critical)
  • Can wait (least significant)

With this strategy, I can focus on the most critical content according to the examination point of view and skip less essential questions. I also plan my schedule according to the weightage of each question. I can design my whole syllabus according to the marking scheme. First, I can prepare the most important questions and ignore the least important ones to achieve high scores.

I also learned how much material should be added to each question to gain full marks. I also understand the type of content that should be prepared for each paper. I may also understand each answer’s length according to the marking scheme and the trend of upcoming exams.

Improve writing practice

Sometimes, while writing for exams, I frequently write answers without noticing the length and writing of the answers. To avoid this, I need more writing practice. By practicing model exams, I can improve their writing skills. With practice, I can understand each answer’s length and make preparations accordingly. As IGCSE exams are comprised of short and brief questions, I can quickly improve my writing practice.

I not only focus on the length of answers but also can focus on paper presentation and handwriting. Paper attempts in poor handwriting and with poor presentation are worthless. So, students need to improve their writing practice. In this way, I also learned time management. I also learned to overcome anxiety during exams with the help of proper time management.

Identifying renegotiated content and topics

I always observe that already assessed topics are repeated in exams. Last year’s exams enabled me to analyze the renegotiated content in exams. In this way, I can understand the importance of content and also explore how many times a question is repeated before. This also helped me know which content seems less likely necessary.

Content and topics assessed before are the most important to be covered. I always prepare those topics that are considered and then the rest of the content. Selective studies enable me to prepare myself to perform better in actual examinations. Because I often prepare the content that seems most important and is often repeated in exams.

Recognizing repeated and essential concepts

Recognizing repeated and essential concepts is the critical factor of a successful student. With the help of past papers, I always identify basic concepts and focus on these topics instead of preparing a whole syllabus. IGCSE past papers help me to stay focused on important concepts so that I can easily crack exams and achieve high grades. Past papers enable me to understand the importance of each piece of content quickly, and I plan my syllabus accordingly.

Model answers have always proved to be helpful tools for me. With the help of the model answer, I analyze the nature of the content for each question and prepare myself accordingly.
