Design and Technology 0445 over 1

The main topics included in IGCSE Design and Technology-0445 by Cambridge are observation and research. Design brief specifications, generate possible ideas, evaluation, implementation, and realization. Topics included for health and safety prospects are the Initiation and development of ideas, recording data, Communication of design ideas, Use of technology in design and making, the role of Design & technology in society, Practical application of designing, Environment, and sustainability, and control of its evaluation.

The optional topics included in IGCSE Design and Technology-0445 by Cambridge are practical evaluations. Topics for Resistant Material are types of material, preparation of material, Setting, measuring, marking out, testing, shaping, joining, assembling, and finishing. Topics that need to be considered for System and Control are Systems & Control Key content, Structure, Mechanism, and electronics. Topics for graphic products are formal drawing techniques, projections, views, and developments and presenting and communicating information.

Assessment Details Design and Technology-0445.

Cambridge conducts assessments for this subject in theoretical and practical forms. To achieve high grades in the final examination, students must pass papers 1, project, paper 3, paper 4, and paper 5. With paper 1 students have to submit a project based on conceptual knowledge. Students have to choose the project title and submit it before paper 3. Paper 1 consists of 50 marks and it is written and drawing paper. There are 50 marks for paper 3, assessed from specialized content: Resistant material. Paper 4 is assessed from specialized content: System and control. For paper 5, students had to prepare graphics products. There are 50 marks for each paper.

Paper 1: Peoduct Design

It is written and drawing paper. There are 50 marks for paper A. The time allowed for this paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes. This paper is compulsory. With this paper, the teacher tests Common Content: Product Design:  Product Design. However, candidates must also use their knowledge of their chosen specialist option. Students have to attempt one question out of three questions. This paper assesses optional content as one question, including Resistant material.

In this paper, one question is about System & control and one is about Graphic products. Candidates may answer any of the questions, irrespective of the specialist option they have studied. All questions are mandatory; students must answer them on an A3 sheet. A calculator is allowed for this paper.

Paper 3: Resistant Materials

It is written paper. There are 50 marks for paper A. The time allowed for this paper is 1 hour. This paper is compulsory. With this paper, the teacher tests Resisit material and common content: Product Design.  However, candidates must also use their knowledge of their chosen specialist option. All questions in section A are mandatory. The total marks for section A are 25. In section B students have to answer 1 question out of 3 questions. The total marks for section B are 25. As questions are mathematical, a calculator is needed during the examination. That’s why students can use the calculator while attempting the question.

Paper 4: System and Control

It is written paper. There are 50 marks for this paper. The time allowed for this paper is 1 hour and 50 minutes. This paper is mandatory. With this paper, the students must prepare a system and control content and common content: Product Design.  However, students must also enhance their knowledge about their specific specialization. In the specialist option, students must focus on Structure, Mechanism and Electronics. Overall, the subject content is comprised of two major components.

  • Key content, drawn from across the three focus areas, which will be assessed throughout Paper 4  
  • In-depth focus areas (Structures, Mechanisms, Electronics) will be assessed in Section B of Paper 4.

It is written paper. There are 50 marks for this paper. The time allowed for this paper is 1 hour and 50 minutes. This paper is mandatory. To achieve high grades on this paper, the students must prepare Graphic product content and common content, such as product design.  However, students must also enhance their knowledge about their specific specialization. All questions in section A are mandatory. The total marks for section A are 25. In section B students have to answer 1 question out of 3 questions. The total marks for section B are 25. Graphic Products and Common content may be assessed in either section of the examination paper.

While appearing in this paper students should have standard drawing equipment so that they don’t need to face any inconvenience during exams. Students can add more items to the list.
